Reuniting Chloe Years After Katrina

I've been saving this one. It's about a 13- year old Tabby named Chloe.

Sam sent his wife Jean out of town for the hurricane and stayed behind with the dog and cat. Sam and the pup ended up on the roof, with Chloe scrambling up a tree next to the house. Sam refused official rescue, as they would not take the pets and waited it out.

Finally a neighbor came by in a boat and pulled all 3 from the roof, dropping them at Chalmette high school. But when they got to the school, Chloe had escaped from the boat.

Bereft, Sam and Jean looked for Chloe but all the veterinary records were lost in the storm, as were so many. The couple were not able to return to St. Bernard Parish.

Chloe was finally found at a the same Chalmette high school and brought in to ARNO. She still had on her pink collar and tags. After not being able tolocate her family, in a last ditch effort one of ARNO's volunteers, Kristy, bought an ad in the paper. In a "friend of a friend" situation word got back to Sam and Jeanne.

They were able to finally come together again as a family. Now, while this is a great story, and I have tried not to tell it overly emotionally, what is really amazing is that it happened THIS MONTH! Almost 2 years after the storm, ARNO is still managing to bring families back together by sweat and perserverance, and damned hard labor, by being out on the street, by trapping, by tracking, by doing a hundred things.

Bless everyone there. It's been too long, they shouldn't have to still be doing this work.

Feeding and Watering in the Lower 9th Ward

When you feed and water Maria sends you a route section of places to go to. It’s a huge list and there are more than 30 sections. The Lower Ninth is section 16. You take notes as you go and then add them to the website records so that the next person to cover the route knows what’s been happening.

We spent a lot of time getting lost, of course, and were only able to cover about 30 stations. I am going to paste in some of the notes that we took so you can get a better idea of what it was like.

The first thing is the Station Number and address, then the notes from the last time someone was there (in Red) then our notes from May. (Blue)

STATION 47 EXACT ADDRESS: 1523 N VILLERE / CROSS STREET: At corner of Columbus and Villere, left F/W underneath green house and wrote “F/W – 2/17/07 – KC” on house. 5/12/071523 N Villiere No address, rebuilding?
We could not tell if this was the correct address but Left FW 2 houses down from corner of Villiere and Columbus.

5/12/7 NEW STATION ?
1306 MARAIS – cross street is Urquhart or Poland, sign askew so couldn’t tell for sure.
saw grey thin or young (photo name 1306 Marais) so left FW under stairs of house

STATION 62 EXACT ADDRESS: 1807 URQUHART / CROSS STREET: ST. ANTHONY ST. ADDRESS CHANGED TO: 1338 ST. ANTHONY – CORNER OF URQUHART & ST. ANTHONY

5-12-7 F/W
Now repainted bright blue but neighbors say not inhabited. Cats seen.

5/12/7 STATION ADDED
1318 St. Anthony F/W left inside doorway of house.Neighbors see a few cats, not as many as before. We sighted gray tabby with white under throat, ran too fast for picture.
