General letter sent asking fo donations

07:05 pm: general letter about trip to ARNO
Request for donations to help me help the animals still affected by Hurricane Katrina

If this is the sort of thing that irritates you are seems in bad taste, please just hit “delete” and no harm, no foul, and I hope I haven’t offended you. I will send no other emails than this one.

Please forward this around as you think appropriate.

I’m asking for donations. Not a lot, a couple of dollars, whatever you can spare. Larger amounts make me happy, too. I want to go to New Orleans to volunteer at ARNO. Having been out of work for the last year, I don’t have the money, but I have the time and a willing back.

ARNO (Animal Rescue New Orleans) was founded after Katrina and Rita for the purpose of animal rescue.

After Katrina and Rita hit, over 50,000 pets were left dead and homeless. About 10,000 of then were saved through rescue efforts. There is only space to hold about 200 animals at any given time, so feeding stations were set up around the city, manned by volunteers who drive around all day replenishing food and water.

Today there are over four thousand of these feeding stations that have to be maintained by volunteer labor.

The URL for ARNO is: http://www.animalrescueneworleans.org/. Be warned that some of the photos deeper into the site are hard to look at. Another great site to check out is for Boulder ex-pat Mike Shiley’s film, “Dark Water Rising.” This video goes into the details of the rescue efforts. I have a copy available if anyone would like to see it. That URL is http://www.darkwaterrising.com/presskit.html

My sister and I will go from May 9th to 14th to help with feed stations and cat trapping. ARNO is trying to capture and spay roughly 10,000 cats.

Airline tickets are pretty cheap right now, about $300 with the fees. Gas and car rental will be a little more than that, and hotel is not even something I want to think of right now. (Yep, I was brave enough to live in my car in Denver. Nope, I’m not brave enough to do that in New Orleans.)

I’m asking for donations of whatever you might afford to help cover our getting there and gas/car rental for driving around and replenishing stations. This is not party money – I’m not planning on going out at night or having more than one meal out while there.

If you would like to help but not in this way, please consider making a donation directly to ARNO, either by way of their website, or if you prefer I can take checks made out to them directly.

P.S. – they really need roasting pans! There will be a full wish list and more information on our blog. We will post our experiences each night, along with photos.

Thank you so much for reading this far, and for any help you can give. If you would like to donate anything at all, email me or call me at #########, check out the blog, or catch me in person. My address is ############# . If you can’t, please watch our blog anyway; we will be there in May and loading pictures while there.
